Hazelnut trees are a plant of immense versatility and opportunity for land stewards and agricultural entrepreneurs. They subsist in poor nutrient sandy soils, prevent erosion and flooding, offer wonderful habitat and a seasonal food for wildlife in addition to their food product potential for humans.

Whether or not you are currently growing hazelnut trees, there’s much to learn and appreciate about this plant in Northern Michigan. This tour will provide a great introduction to this plant for beginners and also a lively discussion among enthusiasts and entrepreneurs who have some relationship and experience with it already. Come join Crosshatch, the Conservation Districts of Antrim, Leelanau, Benzie and Grand Traverse Counties, and the MSU Product Center for a tour of an Antrim County property with mature Hazelnut tree plantings and learn about the various household, ecological and business opportunities they can provide.

Presenters will include:

  • Mike Meriwether, Forester with Antrim Conservation District

  • Kama Ross, District Forester with Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Benzie County Conservation Districts

  • Parker Jones, Innovation Counselor with Michigan State University Community, Food & Environment Institute and Product Center

Let’s gather for inspiration and preparation for new perennial plantings of resilient hazelnuts in the sandy nooks across our landscape.
