In partnership with Earthwork Harvest Gathering, Festi, and Earthwork Music.

June 27
11am to 12:30pm

Visible mending with Tina Bury

Visible mending is a nod to the traditions of prolonging the life of our clothes and our fabrics through the art of caring for them. We’ll learn techniques borrowed from the Japanese – Sashiko stitches and Boro cloth – and our own quilting roots.  Students will see examples of visible mending, talk about mending techniques, and mend a piece of fabric to then make into a small pouch. Suitable for all skill levels.

To get the most from this class, you are encouraged to bring a garment to be mended or fabric pieces that have been cut, per the directions in the Visible Mending PDF, or even just some scrap, woven fabric. You'll also want fabric scissors, thread (I prefer Sashiko thread, but any thick, quality thread will work), and a hand sewing needle. You can see a complete list of materials for the pouch project and for mending in general, in the Visible Mending PDF.

To make it easier for folks to source materials, you have the option to purchase a kit that will be mailed to your home. The pouch kit includes fabric for the pouch project, sashiko thread, a button and jersey pull, the instructor's favorite hand sewing needle, and a printed copy of the Visible Mending PDF. The cost for the kit is $15, which includes postage and a couple of dollars for the instructor to put them together and package them up.

This event will be live on Facebook. Register at Kinship Handwork to receive the Visible Mending PDF here.

Changes are upon us, and we are being called to reconsider the ways we feed, educate and sustain each other, and the ways we organize our economies and lives. Drawing on the roots of community resiliency, we're going to hold some space, and balance teaching and conversation to get us a little further down the road.

There's so much to address; so many immediate needs, from the disproportionate impact of COVID-related chaos on communities of color to the long-standing systems that injure and destroy both people and planet. This seven weeks of programming is one small offering in the direction of creating new ways of living and being with each other in the world.

These programs are free for all; contributions to the hosting organizations are welcome but not demanded. We are grateful to all of our presenters for their volunteerism, leadership, and knowledge-sharing at this time more than ever.
