Decolonizing our Thoughtlife—Facilitated Discussion with Leora Miskopwaaganikwe Lancaster

Colonialism is the practice of exerting political control over a nation, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Decolonizing our thoughtlife is a healing opportunity, aimed at recognizing and respecting Indigenous wisdom and sovereignty, and understanding interdependence.

Miskopwaaganikwe Leora Tadgerson is an instructor of Anishinaabe language through Northern Michigan University’s Center for Native American Studies. Leora is also the Community Engagement and Program Manager through NMU’s Office for Diversity and Inclusion. She is the co-editor of the Decolonizing Diet Project Cookbook and a proud, resilient, Indigenous Mother of two boys.

Changes are upon us, and we are being called to reconsider the ways we feed, educate and sustain each other, and the ways we organize our economies and lives. Drawing on the roots of community resiliency, we're going to hold some space, and balance teaching and conversation to get us a little further down the road.

There's so much to address; so many immediate needs, from the disproportionate impact of COVID-related chaos on communities of color to the long-standing systems that injure and destroy both people and planet. This seven weeks of programming is one small offering in the direction of creating new ways of living and being with each other in the world.

These programs are free for all; contributions to the hosting organizations are welcome but not demanded. We are grateful to all of our presenters for their volunteerism, leadership, and knowledge-sharing at this time more than ever.
